Free trade benefits poorer countries

Letter to London local newspapers

Dear Sir

Meetings of the world's richest countries such as the recent G8 meeting in Germany remind us all of the plight of the world's poorest. It is frustrating to see how slowly politicians' pledges are turned into concrete action. We may feel powerless but there are things we can do to help.

Think of the unique goods and services that you have enjoyed when visiting a foreign country, perhaps one where you have friends or relatives. If these goods or services are not available here, it may be because European trade rules keep those goods and services out. I would be interested to hear from Londoners who know of a product or service which may not be being imported because of red tape.

The easier we can make it to buy goods and services from poorer countries, the more people in these countries can help themselves and not have to rely on hand outs.

Yours sincerely
