National community service

Letter to London local newspapers
Sir
With violent crime and anti-social behaviour at unacceptable levels, many people feel that we are suffering from a broken society, but how can we fix it?
People I meet in my work as a London Member of the European Parliament tell me that the biggest challenge is to raise our young people with a shared set of values and common codes of civilised behaviour.
Conservative leader David Cameron recently suggested a national service programme for 16 year olds. While military service would be one option available, teenagers could also spend their summer working with the elderly, participating in community ventures or even travelling to developing countries to assist with projects there.
London has much to offer young people in terms of worthwhile community projects. For many younger people a summer in the community will act as a rite of passage and develop life skills.
If you are involved in a community project in which young people could participate or if you have ideas on how best to bring on young people to become better citizens I would be interested to hear from you at syed@syedkamall.com
Yours sincerely
