People can make up their own minds about the need for a referendum
Brussels, 11th October 2007 -- A Conservative Euro-MP has produced a pocket guide to the European reform treaty in an effort to explain concisely which powers are being transferred to Brussels from Westminster, the institutions that will be created, and the similarities between the new treaty and the old constitution.
Syed Kamall, Conservative MEP for London, said he wanted to let people know the facts as clearly as possible so they can judge for themselves the need for a referendum in Britain before the treaty is ratified.
He said:
"We keep telling people that this treaty would significantly shift powers from Westminster to Brussels, but many people do not know enough about the detail. I have condensed the main elements of the constitution into a pocket guide that explains the new institutions being created, the powers being transferred and the similarities between the rejected constitution and the reform treaty being discussed now.
"Although I believe there must be a referendum and I would wholeheartedly support a 'no' vote, I believe people - when armed with the facts - will be much more vociferous in their opposition to the manner this government has attempted to deceive the people.
"This pocket guide seeks to cut through the government's spin and set out clearly what this treaty would mean for Britain."
