Livingstone should let Londoners decide for themselves how to travel

Letter to London local newspapers
Sir
London Mayor, Ken Livingstone, has suggested he will seek to revoke permits for flights operating from London to both Brussels and Paris, now that the High Speed Rail Link from St Pancras has opened.
Eurostar currently has no competition on cross-channel rail routes. Prohibiting airlines from operating services might make the Eurostar even more crowded than London commuter lines and will certainly hand it a monopoly. As we have seen with the aviation industry, more competition means lower costs and better choice and quality of services.
The Mayor's idea may yet prove illegal under EU law, but I would be eager to hear your views on whether we should ban flights to Paris and Brussels, or whether we should allow people to decide for themselves how they wish to travel. My email address is syed@syedkamall.com.
Yours sincerely
Syed Kamall MEP
Conservative Euro-MP for London
