People demand their referendum
Brussels, 3rd March 2008 -- The 77% of local voters who say they want a referendum on the European Constitution must not be ignored by the government, Syed Kamall, Conservative MEP for London, said today.
The 'I Want A Referendum' campaign held a number of ballots in marginal seats across the country. In London the vote was held in Hammersmith. The turnout was 21.8% (1.2% less than in the 1999 European elections), and a whopping 76.7% said there should be a referendum and 78.9% indicated they would vote 'No' if the government were to honour its promise.
Mr Kamall, who has written a Pocket Guide explaining the key aspects of the Treaty, said Gordon Brown must now finally give the people the say they are demanding on this document before ratification.
He said:
"Londoners were promised a say on the European Constitution and this ballot has shown they expect the government to honour their manifesto commitment.
"The Lisbon Treaty looks deceptively different to the European Constitution, but its substance is fundamentally identical. I have put together a Pocket Guide to the Treaty, which sets out the key areas of power being handed over, and the new EU agencies that would be created.
"The British government must stop attempting to treat voters like fools by pretending this document does not significantly shift powers to the EU.
"There are a number of marginal constituencies in London, and local MPs should heed the strength of public opinion and vote to reject the Constitution unless people get the vote they were promised by every main Party."
