Conservatives Pledge to Hold European Constitution Referendum

Tuesday, 7th October 2008

Syed Kamall, MEP for London has welcomed David Cameron's commitment to hold a referendum on the European Constitution. The Labour Party pledged the referendum in 2005, but when the Constitution was repackaged as the Lisbon Treaty they reneged on their promise.

A number of countries rejected the original constitution but when it was represented as a Treaty only the Irish got a referendum, they voted no. There are now fears that they will be required to revote until they say yes.

Syed Kamall said:

"This is a matter of trust between politicians and the public. Voters in this country deserve the right to have their say because that was the promise made to them in 2005.

Most people want to be part of the European Union but they disagree with the high handed way it's being implemented. Politicians must always give people the sort of government they want."

David Cameron said (in his speech to party Conference):

"...there's one other thing that destroys trust in politics. And that's parties putting things in their manifesto and then doing the complete opposite. Next year in those European elections we will campaign with all our energy for that referendum on the European constitution that Labour promised but never delivered. Taking responsibility is how we will mend our broken politics."
