Import limits are bad news for Londoners

Letter to London local newspapers
Dear Editor
In 2005, the European Parliament voted to remove the guidelines on the amount of goods subject to duty that shoppers could bring back from other EU countries. We all raised a cheer because it meant the return of day trips to Calais and loading the car up on the way home with cheap goods.
But last month Labour MEP's voted to reduce the amount of goods we could bring back from the continent. This is bad news for Londoners. It breaks the spirit of the single market and will mean more intrusive searches of innocent British shoppers by UK border control. Let's hope that Gordon Brown will get into the spirit of Christmas and ignore his Labour MEP's by refusing to implement the guidelines.
Yours sincerely,
Syed Kamall MEP
