Fruit and Veg Regulations
Monday, 31st August 2009
Letter to London local newspapers
Dear Sir,
Readers may be relieved to hear of a partial victory in our battle to get the European Union to lift its ban on wonky fruit and veg. Marketing standards for 26 types of fruit and vegetable, which governed the size and shape of many products and prevented healthy food being marketed, will be scrapped entirely. This is great news, and it should mean that less fresh fruit and veg is thrown away unnecessarily and possibly lead to cheaper prices.
However, the battle is only half-won. For a further ten types of fruit and vegetable, some standards will remain in place and can only be sold if they are clearly labelled as mis-shapen! I personally think we should scrap these regulations too. After all, it is obvious to most people when they look at a vegetable whether it is mis-shapen or not.
Let's hope that one day, the Eurocrats in Brussels will trust British shoppers to use our common sense to decide for ourselves which fruit and vegetables we want to buy.
Yours faithfully,
Syed Kamall
