The European Progress Microfinance Facility

Thursday, 7th January 2010

Letter to London local newspapers

Dear Sir,

The European Parliament recently voted to make it easier for people to obtain small loans so they can start up their own businesses or make existing ones grow.

The European Progress Microfinance Facility is going to allocate sums of up to approximately £22,000 to people who need finance in order to start or help develop small businesses. It is due to be put into place in early 2010 and has been conceived to assist companies with ten or fewer employees and turnovers of less than £1.8M. The Facility will be open to public and private bodies in Member States that provide micro-finance to persons and micro-enterprises.

As a firm believer in Britain's entrepreneurial spirit and the fundamental role that small businesses play in our economy, I welcome this initiative. Readers interested in the making use of the scheme should please contact me at syed.kamall@europarl.europa.eu and I will try to get more information to them.

Yours sincerely,

Syed Kamall
