Syed Kamall welcomes Obama trade initiative
Saturday, 16th February 2013
Over the last few years, Syed Kamall MEP has been a member of the Transatlantic Policy Network attending meetings in Brussels and Washington DC with administration officials and Congressmen together to discuss the prospects of a new EU-US trade agreement.
He welcomes President Obama’s decision to open trade talks with the EU as “offering the prospect of a massive boost to transatlantic trade&rldquo;. Describing the initiative as “a rare chance for western developed economies to remain the most prosperous nations on earth”, Dr Kamall said “the new deal should be priority number one for the European Union over the next two years”.
“Many developing economies are dropping their barriers to trade unilaterally, which shows how confident they are in their ability to compete on a world stage and how serious they are about bringing in investment to generate growth. We in Europe and the US cannot put up the shutters, bank our gains of the 20th century and let our economies stagnate in the 21st. Opening up our markets to each other will help our industries become more efficient, attract greater investment and enable them to compete in the world.“
